    Making t-shirts in India

    Five questions brands ask before a first run.

    100 pieces per style on stock yarn. Cotton jersey needs nothing upstream that sets a higher floor. Polos, fleece and hoodies usually need 150–250 because of trims and collar sourcing. We confirm the exact minimum with the factory before you commit.

    Typical cut, make and trim is $4–9 per t-shirt before fabric, and fabric is roughly half the factory price. Our calculator estimates $7.20–$13.20 per piece ex-factory at 100–300 pieces with a mid fabric. These are estimates; the factory quotes after reading your brief.

    Plan 3–5 weeks for sampling, then 12–16 weeks from approved sample to goods shipped on a first order, and 8–10 weeks on a repeat.

    Diwali (October or November, date moves every year) closes most factories for 1–2 weeks; the monsoon (June to September) slows dyeing.

    Ordinary duty plus an 18% reciprocal tariff (US and India joint statement, 6 February 2026). A cotton knit tee (HTS 6109.10.00) carries 16.5% ordinary duty, so a $6.00 FOB tee lands at about $8.47 with $0.99 ordinary duty, $1.08 reciprocal tariff and $0.40 freight. The 2026 position is still moving; check your classification with your customs broker.

    Yes. India holds the largest national share of GOTS-certified facilities (GOTS, 2025). Say you need GOTS in the brief and we place it only with factories that hold it. Check the certificate number in the GOTS database before you pay; we don’t list certifications we haven’t verified.
