What Ludhiana makes best

Built for winter weights

When a brand needs a wool or acrylic sweater, a knitted winter layer or socks, Ludhiana is where India makes them at scale.

Best for

Sweaters and winter layers

Brands adding knitwear or cold-weather pieces to a range, usually from a few hundred pieces per style.

Why it works here

Organized around winter product

The cluster’s lines and suppliers are set up for winter-weight yarn and knitting. That depth is why it leads for sweaters, and why summer product is not its strength.

Specializations describe where a cluster is strongest, not the only thing it makes.

Put this in your brief

Yarn, gauge and colors

Name the fiber and blend, the knit gauge if you know it, and how many colors per style: each color is its own yarn dye lot.

Market floor

250–400pieces

Wool sweater. The yarn dye lot sets the floor. Market range, not a quote.

Honest limits

Where Ludhiana is the wrong call

A winter cluster is the wrong place for a summer drop. Splitting the range by weight gets each style to the line that makes it every day.

Where it struggles

Lightweight summer product

Tees, light jersey and summer wovens are not what Ludhiana is built for. Quoting them there means asking a winter line to do someone else’s job.

What to do instead

Split the range by weight

Keep sweaters and winter layers here; send summer knits and wovens to the clusters built for them. One brief can cover both.

Worth knowing

Winter stock queues up in summer

Orders for winter stock queue up in summer, so plan early. Send the brief before your sampling window, not when you need bulk.

If no factory in our group is built for your product, we tell you by email before any fee is discussed.

Minimums and timing

What sets the minimum in Ludhiana

For knitwear the yarn sets the floor: every color is its own dye lot. These are market ranges from published industry sources, not quotes; we confirm the exact figure with the factory.

From brief to shipped

  1. BriefReply within 24 hours

We read it, check the fit and quote our fee in writing before any work starts.

  2. Sampling3–5 weeks

Longer if the fabric has to be commissioned. Approve fit, fabric and finish here.

  3. Fabric3–6 weeks

Usually the critical path. Ask for the fabric delivery date, not only the ship date.

  4. Production4–6 weeks

Once fabric is in house: cutting, sewing, finishing and the factory’s own checks.

  5. Shipped12–16 weeks

From approved sample to goods shipped on a first order. Repeat orders: 8–10 weeks.

Plan around the calendar

  • Winter season: Orders for winter stock queue up in summer. Plan early and brief before your sampling window.
  • Diwali: October or November, and the date moves every year. Most factories close for 1–2 weeks, right in the middle of winter production.
  • Monsoon: June to September. Humidity slows dyeing and drying, so add buffer on dyed yarn.

Making knitwear in Ludhiana

Five questions brands ask before a winter run.

Wool, acrylic, sweaters, winterwear and socks. It is the only real winter-weight cluster in India at scale. It is the wrong cluster for lightweight summer product.

Usually 250–400 pieces per style, because the yarn dye lot sets the floor and each color is its own lot. Fewer colors per style keeps the minimum down. These are market ranges, not quotes; we confirm the exact figure with the factory.

Early. Orders for winter stock queue up in summer. Plan 3–5 weeks for sampling, then 12–16 weeks from approved sample to goods shipped on a first order, and 8–10 weeks on a repeat.

Diwali falls in October or November, moves every year and closes most factories for 1–2 weeks.

It is not where we would send them. Cotton jersey belongs in Tiruppur, which works from 100 pieces on stock yarn. One brief can cover both: we place each style with the factory built for it.

We place by product, not by city: your brief goes to the factory in our group built for it, and for sweaters that means a knitwear specialist. The Directory ($39) lists 80+ documented factories with region, specialties, MOQs and certifications.
