Where wovens are made

Wovens follow the fabric and the detail. Three clusters cover most briefs.

What it costs

What a shirt or dress costs to make

Fabric is roughly half the factory price, and in wovens it also sets the minimum. Choose it first.

Typical cut, make and trim

$14–32 per piece

Cut, make and trim for a dress, before fabric. A market figure, not a quote; we have no live CMT figure for shirts.

Making shirts and dresses in India

Five questions brands ask before a first run.

About 300 pieces per style on stock fabric, where the fabric roll length sets the floor. If the fabric has to be woven for you, the mill’s own minimum pushes it to around 1,000. These are market ranges, not quotes.

Switch to a stock fabric. When a factory quotes 1,000, ask whether the constraint is the fabric: if it is, a stock fabric usually moves the number more than any negotiation will.

Typical cut, make and trim is $14–32 per dress before fabric. Our calculator estimates $18.00–$38.00 per piece ex-factory at 300–500 pieces with a mid fabric. These are estimates; the factory quotes after reading your brief.

Plan 3–5 weeks for sampling, longer if the fabric is commissioned, then 12–16 weeks from approved sample to goods shipped on a first order and 8–10 weeks on a repeat.

Diwali (October or November, date moves every year) closes most factories for 1–2 weeks; the monsoon (June to September) slows dyeing.

Usually Delhi NCR for wovens, dresses and hand embroidery; Bangalore for structured and formal pieces on larger programs; Jaipur for hand block prints.
